Coming Together – Using Student Communications to Build Community

Last year’s Leadership Lab gave me a gift I didn’t expect: clarity about what drives me. Discovering that I’m motivated by people and process was eye-opening – it helped me understand that I’m energized by analyzing the needs of others and helping others help themselves. This insight crystallized into my leadership purpose statement: to develop a one-school culture by finding ways to connect learning and build community.

But purpose statements are just the beginning. This season, I’m leaning into the unfinished work of making those connections real. One area I am most curious about is bridging our Junior Campus News Crew with the Senior Campus Creative Labs group – imagine the storytelling power when students become the narrators of their own school’s amazing work. There’s something powerful about students telling the story of learning across grades and campuses, building awareness and community from the inside out.

As I evolve as a leader, I’m hoping to work more closely with faculty and students at the Senior Campus, using my “people and process” motivation to analyze needs and create systems that help to build a stronger K-12 community. I want to use Cohort 21 as my learning lab this year – connecting with other schools to see how they’ve structured student communications, learning from their successes and challenges.

If this growth had a soundtrack, it would open with “Come Together” – because that’s exactly what I’m trying to do: bring people, campuses, and stories together in service of something bigger than any one classroom or grade level.
