Feedback Loops: Reflections on My Action Plan Story

My Action Plan this year centred on some of the problems inherent in one-shot library instruction. To get a sense of what those are, please check out this post or see my slide deck, below. I settled on the HMW question how might we use feedback most effectively in one-shot library instruction? Once again, I loved the opportunity Cohort afforded me to dive deep into this one question, a question of central importance to my students in the Senior School.

Over the course of year, I experimented with new tools to embed feedback into my information literacy instruction, especially using the Pear Deck add-on for Google Slides and EdPuzzle. The data I collected allowed me to tailor my message to the needs of my students in the moment, and refine lesson plans for future use. Of course, this is only a small part of how I intend to address the shortfalls of one-shot instruction, and this year has also given me the opportunity to wrestle with some of those larger, thornier questions. Questions such as, how do we align our program to ensure these skills are scaffolded and integrated with what other departments are doing? And, how can we continue to build collaborative relationship with faculty that involve the library in the design of learning experiences?

I feel like I’ve just gotten in front of the right set of questions again and I’m so thankful for the work of the facilitators, other coaches, and most of all, this year’s Cohort for getting me there.

  1. @lmustard – You had a really important HMW question and it is clear that you have really used it to guide your library instruction this year. Your takeaways are gold, and your ideas for where to go next show how this year’s experience is informing future growth as well. Love the honesty in this post. Makes me wish I was back in the library so that I could piggyback off of your learning! Looking forward to seeing you Friday.

  2. @lmustard – thank you for sharing these insights! This post and your action plan resonated for me because I encounter similar experiences in my role as a resource teacher in our Centre for Learning. I also grapple with which IB Approaches to Learning skills I can contribute to classes and how can I best determine if the concepts I am teaching are landing effectively. Thank you for validating the use of both digital and analogue tools not only collect formative assessment data, but also as effective instructional strategies; always heartening to hear in an age when digital solutions seem to be more highly valued.

Glad to hear that you are thinking about future investigations to align your scope and sequence documents to the programs of other departments. I am also working through this exercise with executive functioning skills and would love to share ideas.

I have loved working and coaching with you this year and I look forward to future talks and projects!
    Thanks again,
    Tina
