Teaching Philosophy & Bio

I am a third year teacher at Rothesay Netherwood School where I am involved in the Grade 9 English and Discovery classes and am also a Houseparent for our junior girls dorm. I am an active member of our community, involved heavily in athletics and student life, and am at a point where I am ready to challenge myself and I am looking forward to receiving feedback from like-minded people to enhance my classroom practices.
I believe that learning is not measured by the ability to regurgitate facts and dates from textbooks. Learning is the ability to take what they already know and extend their learning and apply what they have learned to new situations.  Meaning is something that is constructed and not prescribed. As a teacher I believe that empowering students to construct their own knowledge is critical.  By doing and being involved in the process, students can learn more deeply.  Students must be engaged in learning: enthusiasm is contagious!
