Bringing it Back: Sharing my C21 Experience at SCS

After a completely awesome final F2F session at UCC at the end of April, I was excited to take what I had shared and learned back to the broader community of SCS staff.  At our May staff meeting, I spoke briefly about the Cohort 21 experience and the basis of my project using the augmented reality app Aurasma to change readers’ advisory.  Adam Caplan, Cohort 21 coach and SCS Technology & Teaching Coach, followed up with an email and a display in the staffroom showing off the different features of Aurasma and samples of student work:

  • Scan a book cover to see a video of a student’s review.
  • Scan a picture of a TEDTalk speaker and it turns into his video. Tap his name and it takes you to the website.
  • Scan a photo of a staff member and find out what animation appears.
  • Scan a math lesson to view a hint, watch a lesson, or download a homework file.
  • Scan the lemonade to view a recipe.
  • Scan an anchor poster to read a blog post about it.

For the rest of the school year, teachers experimented with augmented reality at their leisure, Screen Shot 2015-06-25 at 10.48.25 AMand it led to fascinating conversations about how to harness this tool for great teaching and learning opportunities.  In addition, Principal Martha Perry live tweeted my presentation to the staff, and that led to a parallel conversation happening online.

Thank you to everyone at SCS, and especially Adam, for your help and support. Thank you to my fellow Cohort 21 members, and to the facilitators and coaches, for such an inspiring year together.

  1. As the mom of one of those SCS students, I was amazed at the auras a my grade 5 daughter developed to go with her Anna Maria Mozart presentation. Thanks fir the ripple effect from Cohort 21 to the classroom!
