Spiraling Upwards with Design Thinking

So, post Cohort 21 F2F #2, where am I? Where will I go next? Where is my thinking with regards to my action plan? I can honestly say that where I am right now, where my thinking is at, is solidly “trapped” in an upward spiral of Design Thinking. Design Thinking Spiral

As I was working through the “Design Thinking Your Action Plan” booklet throughout Saturday’s F2F, I thought: “This is it; this is my question. I’m now on my way! I am finally out of this crazy thinking spiral”.

I SHOULD HAVE KNOWN IT WAS TOO GOOD TO BE TRUE. When we shifted tables and connected with other cohort members to reflect on our “How Might We…” statements, @lmcbeth mentioned TPACK as a potential source to draw from as I continue thinking about the challenges and opportunities I have chosen to focus on for this action plan.

Examining that amazingly rich resource this morning, I realize that I am still firmly within this Design Thinking Spiral. So I began again. I re-explored the challenge and learning opportunity facing our school, redefined my users, re-examined their needs, and recreated a series of “How Might We…” questions.

How Might We…

  • Understand “how technology relates to pedagogy and content”?
  • Leverage the “transactional relationship between content knowledge, pedagogical knowledge, and technological knowledge”?
  • Foster reflection about the use of technology and its relationship with both content and pedagogy?
  • Collaborate to more effectively utilize technology to support pedagogy and content?
  • Create time and space to discuss and design learning tasks that effectively utilize the relationship between tecTPACKhnology, pedagogy, and content.

Examining my focus from the TPACK framework has helped me to more clearly articulate my inquiry. So where am I now? I am researching as much as I possibly can about the intersection between Technological Knowledge (TK), Content Knowledge (CK), and Pedagogical Knowledge (PK). And I am getting much more comfortable “living” in the Design Thinking Spiral.

  1. Tanya,

I love your honesty about feeling trapped in a spiral. I honestly believe that we are always somehow caught in a spiral towards some sort of learning. Your ‘How might we’ questions are powerful and I am glad you have found calmness within the TPACK framework. You will have a on-up for our next F2F when we delve into this more intimately. I look forward to seeing where it takes you!

  2. Tanya,
Great list of questions. I would highly recommend that you run some of these by your admin – which ones resonate with them? Which ones could best serve the school, teachers and/or students…
    Great rethinking here!

  3. Tanya,

Where are you now in the process? Closer to an “action plan”. Post a few of your current thoughts so we can help you or push your thinking even further.

  4. Tanya these are just the kind of deep questions about tech and pedagogy that I love to focus on! My selection of tech is usually strictly limited to those that I’m sure will earn their keep in efficiency or improved student learning. I’m looking forward to seeing how your action plan develops as you hang out in this spiral of design thinking – not a bad place to be!
