Reflecting on my action plan

What a fantastic little experiment in Personalized learning.

My idea:

Why I did it:

• Tired of boring test style summatives (although IB demands it)

• Want to bring real-world connections to Ecology unit

• Trying to find ways to get students to read Science journal/news articles

What I did:

1. Students select from a list of >100 articles

2. Students research topic and prepare to lead a 10 min discussion on article

   • Provide info verbally, through presentation

   • Ask probing questions

   • generate meaningful discussion

3. Over the course of a week, students lead discussions surrounding:

   • food, sustainability, biodiversity, carbon footprint, population growth

My key learning:

• students are so knowledgeable when given a chance to integrate learning from many disciplines

• personalized learning helps students engage deeply in a topic

• Mandatory participation is sometimes necessary to give everyone a chance to shin
