My idea:
Why I did it:

Tired of boring test style summatives (although IB demands it)

Want to bring real-world connections to Ecology unit
- Trying to find ways to get students to read Science journal/news articles
What I did:

Students select from a list of >100 articles

Students research topic and prepare to lead a 10 min discussion on article

Provide info verbally, through presentation

Ask probing questions
-
generate meaningful discussion

Over the course of a week, students lead discussions surrounding:
- food, sustainability, biodiversity, carbon footprint, population growth
My key learning:

students are so knowledgeable when given a chance to integrate learning from many disciplines
-
personalized learning helps students engage deeply in a topic
- Mandatory participation is sometimes necessary to give everyone a chance to shin
