HOW MIGHT WE QUESTION: How might we leverage a relationship-based approach to create authentic opportunities for observation/conversation with students?
My thinking shifted quite a lot both from the first to the second face to face session, as well as from the beginning to the end of the second face to face session. I really enjoyed the process of collaboratively developing a ‘how might we’ question, and the gallery walk element that allowed me to receive a collection of feedback/guidance pertaining to next steps.
My question began with the intent of making more time for differentiation and documentation, and how this might relate to the teaching of important SEL skills for students. As the session progressed, I decided to think about experimenting with various documentation methods and perhaps honing in on a couple that I feel would be the most effective (based on my initial goal to make more time for what matters). This would essentially mean recording learning that may not be used for a particular assessment or purpose, but rather relating more broadly to student well-being and skill development (e.g., demonstration of ATL or SEL skills).
I have now shifted my attention to consider the different ways in which I can document student learning and how this ultimately contributes to fostering a relationship-based approach as well as a more meaningful use of time (for both myself and my students). More specifically, I would like to connect with Lara Jensen at my school as she is currently developing and experimenting with an electronic system to document student learning (particularly at the Kindergarten level) in a way that is more streamlined and also pertains to my evolved ‘how might we’ question.
In terms of the support I still require, I would like the opportunity to meet with Lara to discuss my plan in more detail, as well as the chance to discuss the documentation methods/approaches of other educators (ideally at the Kindergarten or Primary level).
Questions I still have:
-Because my main goal is to make the best use of time with my students in relation to documentation, what are some of the most efficient ways to document learning (audio recordings vs. written scribes, electronic vs. hard copies, etc.)?
-How can I use the results of my documentation in the most meaningful and optimal ways?
-How much should/can I alter my ‘how might we’ question now that my thinking/vision/plan of action has slightly shifted since the beginning of the session? Would I be able to receive support with this at the next session?
Re posting my comment from Amy’s post and I feel it will be beneficial to you as well!
I consistently prioritize relational teaching because I believe it’s the most effective way to cultivate an environment where students feel comfortable making mistakes and have the necessary support to learn from them. It’s a concept that’s always at the forefront of my thinking.
I highly recommend reading “Empty Your Backpack” by Sam Demma. This book offers valuable insights that I believe every student, parent, and teacher should explore. Sam Demma’s work is truly remarkable, and I encourage you to take a closer look at his impactful contributions to SEL.
Rebecca,
I enjoyed reading your blog post! Just looking into your questions, I’m wondering what platforms or LMS your school is using to help leverage some of the documentation. Would be happy to chat tomorrow. Take care.
@rphilp Congratulations on completing your action plan and the end of the beginning of your cohort 21 journey. I hope you enjoyed the process and that you will continue to apply what you learned to your next classroom challenge. Consider coming back as a coach next year!
