For some reason my post didn’t post so here’s my second shot.
Question 1:
I joined Cohort 21 because as a new teacher, I felt that I had so much to learn and nothing to lose. I really love meaningful learning experiences and surrounding myself with like-minded people and I felt that cohort 21 would kickstart my teaching career in the best way possible. Being able to attend the first meeting with less than a month of teaching under my belt excited me for the wonderful things happening within CIS and the amazing community and their wealth of experience and knowledge.
In terms of goals there are 2 big ideas I am toying with, but I think both are interconnected. Creating authentic meaningful assessments that build on skills that can extend beyond the 4 walls of the classroom and working to decolonize education and incorporate Indigenous pedagogy into math and science. Tests tend to be easy to mark and can be straight forward to study for, but their application beyond the classroom has always been something I’ve struggled with both as a student and as an educator. As a new teacher I feel that assessment is my biggest area for improvement.
Question 2:
The strand that resonates the most with me is “Pedagogy, Belonging and Well-being (7-12)”. Something that is urgent is urgent to me is creating authentic assessments. A few questions I have are 1) How do you create authentic assessments in the world of AI? Any tips on how to create a solid rubric? How do you decide what assessments to give?
So glad you joined Cohort 21! Looking forward to your posts.
@pkobe I hope this comment finds you well. We have one week to go before our 2nd face to face and I just wanted to check in to see how you are doing. Your support group facilitator and team of coaches are standing by to read and give you feedback on your post above. If you can jump in and answer the questions (see above) this weekend or next week it will help us personalize your support.
Looking forward to seeing you next weekend at the York School!
@pkobe – I think these goals and questions are so important – especially now. I also love how connected they are. Assessments that extend beyond the classroom and incorporating indigenous pedagogy into math + science. There are schools on the west coast that seem to be further ahead than we are here – happy to pass along some connections. Garth (@gnichols) has us reading Potlatch as Pedagogy as part of learning team with our Indigenous Education Consultant – Mike Carlson. It has been great listening and learning with others. Happy to share! Can’t wait to see what happens next.
@pkobe Congratulations on completing your action plan and the end of the beginning of your cohort 21 journey. I hope you enjoyed the process and that you will continue to apply what you learned to your next classroom challenge. Consider coming back as a coach next year!
Please take a moment to fill in this exit ticket so we can continue to improve the Cohort 21 experience for next year and beyond.
