Ready…set…Cohort 21!

Design Thinking Sprint - Ideas to improve the 1st 5 min of classWhat a day!  Step 1: Meet & greet.  Step 2: Design Thinking Sprint.  Step 3:  Cohort 21 Tool Carousel.  Step 4: Reflecting & next steps.  I’ve read about and read about Design Thinking, but it wasn’t until I went through the awesome Design Thinking Sprint activity focusing on improving the first 5 minutes of class that I fully understood why Design Thinking is so meaningful.  I will definitely try to apply this in my classes this year.  The IB DP Chemistry Internal Assessment is a great opportunity to have students work through this, but maybe as a middle-distance run instead of a sprint.

Then it was on to the Tool Carousel.  Having worked with Justin for many years, I thought I would already have all these tools in my tool kit.  This was partly true.  The tools were already in my kit, but some were a little rusty, some were underused, and some were ready for an upgrade.  It was great to have some dedicated time to actually explore Twitter, Google+ and Hangouts, Diigo, and WordPress in more depth.  And seeing how other teachers in CISOntario were using these tools in the classroom was invaluable.

Next steps:  Looking forward to where this journey will take me!

  1. I’m looking forward to it too, Marie! You do so many awesome things in your classes already… I’m sure you will find some amazing ways to elevate your practice this year, and I look forward to hearing about it! 🙂

  2. Hi Marie!
So glad to hear that you enjoyed the Design Thinking Sprint. You’re going to love the next face-to-face, when we dive into Design Thinking and spend some time ideating and iterating on our action plans.

If you’re looking for awesome resources/activities related to Design Thinking, you should check out the Cohort 21 shared resources tagged with Design Thinking. I try to point out in the comment about each site where to find practical, hands on activities (such as Crazy 8s) that you can use in your classroom: https://groups.diigo.com/group/cohort-21-resources/content/tag/DesignThinking

I’d love to talk DT more with you. Keep me posted on your foray in to using it in your chemistry class.
    Les
