My foray into Standards Based Grading

Sometimes it’s easier to show than explain:

  1. Hey Ed,
Thanks so much the vlog, I do like videos! Wow, what a breakdown – something I think is so important to look at in order to ensure a balanced test that is so much more than memorizing.

I just shared this with a few people in our Sciences Department. It’s very clear what you’re doing and is an excellent guide for those who are looking to try SBG.

I would be interested to explore what this looks like in a Mod Language Class! I look forward to reconnecting tomorrow @ MaRS!

  2. This is such a transparent, clear, and specific example of how to make grading more transparent, clear, and specific! Way to go actually modelling best practices!

One of my colleagues and past Cohort participants, @rmcarthur is also getting curious about Standards Based Grading and I’m wondering what her thoughts are on your amazing video. Ruth, if you have a moment, share a thought or two on Ed’s blog here!

    1. Hi Ed,

I really like your video. Explaining SBG can be hard, and I like how you went about it. As Celeste said, I am also exploring SBG in my Grade 7 math classroom. Currently my biggest challenge is the KATC and how that is incorporated into the assessment, or if it isn’t.

I don’t know what you are using as your recording method for your levels/marks, but I am exploring Fresh Grade and another teacher (senior physics) is using Achieve Up.

Look forward to seeing what you find as your next steps, challenges and solutions!

      1. Thanks. Fresh Grade looks kind of like Sesame HQ. I can’t find Achieve Up – would it be possible to forward a link? If it’s being used for Physics…
As for KATC (or KICA, or TACK…) I identify each skill/standard as one of the categories, so I know the categories are being hit appropriately.

        1. Hi Ed, I’m Senior Physics and I actually just stumbled upon this page looking at SBG and Freshgrade.

This year I’ve been using ActiveGrade which has been acquired during the year by Haiku Learning. For storing SBG data it’s been great. I’m now looking at SesameHQ and others as a means of keeping student portfolios.

Would love to chat about your year – I’ve been doing much of the same stuff this year in SPH4U as a trial. Next year will look at moving SBG into SPH3U too.

Thanks for the video – it’s a great explanation of SBG and how it fits within Ontario.

          1. Edusight is also now exploring SBG, which is neat because they are Canadian based. Media-X is also offering a Marzano-based SBG gradebook – though I find the setup overly restrictive and confusing, despite the catchphrase of “Grading Made Simple”.

  3. Hi Ed,
Great video! You clearly explain SBG and have created an awesome resource for others. I have already shared with a few of my Klingenstein friends who are also intersted in SBG.
I have one question – how might you apply this to rubric/checklist based model of grading? I don’t use tests in my classes as they focus on Project Based Learning. Currently, most assessments are done via a checklist built around KICA, but I’d be interested to take on this approach. Let’s talk more!
    Thanks for sharing,
    Les
