Let’s Do This!

“What is school spirit?”

I asked a few of our student leaders in Grade 4 and 5 this question. And they had some really great answers: coming together as a school, motivation, support, having fun, meeting new people, cheering, getting hyped up, and of course, parties. When I asked them if they thought school spirit was important, the answer was a resounding “YESSSS!”.

Then I asked, “do you think our school has a lot school spirit?”. There was a slight pause, almost as though they were waiting for someone else to speak first. Then someone spoke up, “we could have more”. We could have more. Agreed, kiddo.

This was followed by an enthusiastic and inspiring conversation about what we could be doing to engage students at our school and how we can “make people like school more”. These student leaders have some amazing ideas!

So this year, I want to focus on building greater school spirit in our Junior School…Let’s do this!

  1. Gotta love 9-10 year olds for always being enthusiastic and speaking their mind! That’s something I love about working with young learners. I was at a presentation this afternoon where Roxanne Higgins (from Independent School Management) talked about the importance of Rally Points (something fun to look forward to) about every 6 weeks in school calendars. She explained that there are natural dips in our ability to withstand stress and being able to look forward to these events can help reduce stress and, as a result, keep us healthier. As your students say, it will also help us “like school more”! Wise words from your students… I’m looking forward to see what you plan with them.
