Google Sites, App Inventor, Design Thinking

Carnac“Name three things I’ve never used in the classroom”  But I’m going to be using all three starting right after the March Break.  I’ve had a great meeting with a colleague from the art department who has experience managing design projects, and he gave me lots of great resources and pointed me toward the Stanford D.School, so I’m going to immerse myself in that.  App Inventor is a programming language, and I have David Wolber’s Course in a Box to help me get the students familiar with the interface and features.

I’m still a bit at sea as to how to use Google Sites as student portfolios for the project phase of my ICS3U course.  Could anyone share their experience with me?

Thanks,

  1. I am very curious to hear how it works out with App Inventor. I’ve played with it a bit, and seen some of the apps submitted to the Technovation Challenge. It seems like a great platform.

    1. Thanks, Ed, I’ll keep posting updates. Thanks again for pointing me toward this platform; I’ve played around with it quite a bit at this point and it’s really powerful and intuitive.

  2. Thanks for sharing the App Inventor resource, Adam. I look forward to hearing how this and course in a box plays out in your classroom.
As for d.school, it’s totally my dream to go there one day! I love how they put many of their techniques and activities out there in an “open source” format for sharing. Let me know if you find any great resources!

    1. Yeah let me know if your students create some cool apps. Don’t forget to check out Touch Develop as well, it looks pretty slick.
I also look forward, somewhat apprehensively, to hearing how all this plays out in the classroom; hopefully not a disaster!

    1. Thanks, Celeste, that’s great insight. I decided to use Sites, even though everyone I talked to was pretty lukewarm on it. I’ve set up a template and I’m just going to have students write a few notes at the end of each class so I can keep them accountable to something. I’ll let you know how it progresses.
BTW: the link you sent is for a different blog, but I found yours 🙂
