Well, I have been struggling with engaging my student's with curriculum because they are distracted by the use of the computers in the classroom @rcampolucci. I had to set a plan of action to get them engaged.  Instead of constantly lecturing and discovering that some are not following along, or some student's are shy to actively participate I had to quickly come up with other strategies to get the curriculum across in a fun way to combat the distraction of the computer during class.

I decided that I would try it out with our Accounting unit.  After teaching the concepts of the Balance Sheet and Income Statement and having the class go through some problems, I realized that some actively participated and others would rather ask a friend for the solutions.  These results were displayed quickly when the class got their test results back.

After talking to the class on their learning experience, I let them know that we are going to play monopoly and at the same time learn the effects of each transaction by recording their entries at the end of each roll of the dice.  Each student now had to properly engage in the game and understand how each play on the board could affect their entry.  Everyone had to be involved.  I learned quickly that those who possible did not participate during the lecture had to be attentive during the game.  My student's had so much fun and enjoyed this way of learning how to record transactions and the understanding of the accounting system.  They did not want to stop playing which ended up with us playing for 2 weeks. But the idea here was for them to understand the debit, credit and how every transaction is connected.

So now when the assignment was introduced, deeper accountability and focus has been seen as my student's work on their accounting assignment.  They are now preparing Balance Sheets and Income Statements and analyzing their Net Worth, Profit or Loss and if they would invest in their company based the results from their transactions. Let see what the results will be.  I foresee more:


As you can see I am waiting for the absolute last moment to put my thoughts down for you to see.  I am not sure why I struggle after experiencing a warm reception at our first C21 Face to Face.  The issue I think I am having is that I have a wealth of information in front of me but I am not using it effectively.  Not sure if I am afraid or just not sure how to use it effectively.

What I am talking about is this piece of Technology in front of me - "My Computer". 💻

Yes although I am a Business Teacher and Business Technology is one of my courses, am I really using the computers effectively in my classroom, or am I just trying to get the curriculum checked off?


I now bring this thought to my classroom and start to address it with my students and colleagues to help me understand if this piece of equipment is a benefit or obstacle to my teaching and getting my students to use it effectively to enhance their education.

  • Not Engaged in their Learning because of the Technology DISTRACTION
  • Afraid to take the Initiative/Risks in their learning because of Technology
  • Having a Positive Mindset when it comes to Technology.

Funny how my son was taking a University Course that he dropped before he even opened the book.  Is this a coincidence that I now find myself thinking does Technology really make this generation the "Dumbest" because they have a wealth of knowledge in front of them, but yet to use it to their benefit?   I guess that I have to now find the time to read the book.

So I have decided to go right to the source and address a couple of questions to my student's and colleagues to see if  I would get the answers that I am looking for.  Not sure what the answers are but I am sure that my little student's will help me out as I am always open to learning from them.  Unfortunately I did not have time to ask my colleagues, so I have to make a note of that for next time. @egelleny @lbettencourt @psenior @smastromonaco @aforti @achuter

  1. How can we make technology use in the classroom more effective for student's rather than a distraction?
  2. How can we make technology in the classroom more of a positive learning experience for all, student's and teachers.
  3. What and how do you want to learn or get out of the use of technology in the classroom?

Step 3

So far after speaking with a few students I have come to realize:

  1. Kids want to learn, but they want to have fun while learning.
  2. Kids do better when they are doing hands on lessons getting to experiment with the task (technology application) by doing.
  3. Applications that bring out challenges and competition works at making learning fun (for some)

So I was told that in my BTT class, one application they love was learning how to type with the program "All The Right Type".

My Business class is excited to be using Spreadsheets and Monopoly to learn the Transactions, Balance Sheet and Income Statement, while playing Monopoly with their friends, during my class.

This is just the beginning, and I have to still do my research on what is truly the Best way to Integrate Technology in my classroom which will give all students the ownership to use if productively in any class setting.

1) Reflect on your own personal learning journey and K-12 education. Identify one learning experience that you can point to as having made a significant impact on some element of your own growth and development. It could be that teacher and subject that really sparked significant growth or a trip that opened your eyes to a whole new world or way of thinking or a non-catastrophic failure that you learned so much from.  Briefly describe the learning experience and identify the various supports, structures, mindsets and relational ingredients that were put in place by the teacher or facilitator that directly contributed to your growth and success. 

After disciplining a student during class, I received an email from the student shortly after the student left my class.  This student was very upset with me saying that I was rude and embarrassed her in front of the whole class.  This student did not think that I liked  her and she believed that she was treated differently than anyone else in the class.  I was distraught by the tone of the email and reached out to my Administrator.  My teaching philosophy is to be fair to all students and I try my best to be the best role model to all of my students.  I then received an email from her father.  We spoke and he addressed his daughter's concerns. To make a long story short, the Administrator, student and I had a group meeting to discuss. We all had a moment to speak and listen to each other. I learned that the student was going through a very rough time because 2 years ago she lost her mother and has been resentful since then.  We tried to solve this and I tried to reach out to this student on many occasions.  To this day although I would say hi  to her when I see her in the hallway, she refuses to open up and accept my apologies for making her feel the way I made her feel. 

2) What is the one Learning skill (MOE) or Approach to Learning (IB ATL) that you feel is MOST important in this day and age? How do you intentionally build it into your curriculum and develop it in your students throughout the year?

I believe that responsibility is the MOST important learning skill. Students should be responsible and take ownership by committing themselves to do their best in any given situation.  This includes completing all assigned homework, group work and assignments in the proper timelines. It is also important for student's to be able to manage his/her behavior during and out of class. By encouraging a Positive mindset in the classroom, I post all assigned work for my students to be aware and visually see what is needed of them to complete a task on time so that they can develop positive learning skills.
