{"id":61,"date":"2014-01-14T18:12:06","date_gmt":"2014-01-14T18:12:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cohort21.com\/timrollwagen\/?p=61"},"modified":"2014-01-14T20:04:42","modified_gmt":"2014-01-14T20:04:42","slug":"action-planning-to-implementation-technology-in-the-science-classroom","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cohort21.com\/timrollwagen\/2014\/01\/14\/action-planning-to-implementation-technology-in-the-science-classroom\/","title":{"rendered":"Action Planning to Implementation &#8211; Technology in the Science Classroom"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: left\">After the November Cohort 21 session, I decided I would embark on planning and implementing the <a title=\"The Digital Era of Teaching \u2013 Action Planning with SAMR\" href=\"https:\/\/cohort21.com\/timrollwagen\/2013\/12\/11\/the-digital-era-of-teaching-action-planning-with-samr\/\">SAMR<\/a> model in my science classroom. \u00a0Through much collaboration with my fellow colleagues, we were able to redesign the Biology unit in grade 10 science with <a title=\"UbD\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Understanding_by_Design\">UbD <\/a>\u00a0(<a title=\"Backward Design\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Backward_design\">backward design<\/a>) and SAMR being the main focus. \u00a0I introduced the online tool, <a title=\"ThingLink\" href=\"www.thinglink.com\">ThingLink<\/a>, to redefine how we assess, organize, and implement a dissection.\u00a0ThingLink is an online interactive picture creator.\u00a0 It allows you to take your own photos and pin information, websites, and videos to the picture.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">Though some may think this is Modification, I argue that it has in fact brought the dissection to a redefinition state, but just barely. \u00a0Using ThingLink allows the students to pin their own pictures and thus create an interactive online dissection portfolio. \u00a0We begin the unit with the frog dissection, and use the pictures and ThingLink (which also has an app for your IPhone\/Android) to add to their own personal dissection pictures as we teach the organ systems, organs, tissues, and cells throughout the unit. \u00a0Essentially, starting with the big picture and working down from there. \u00a0It not only allows students to connect better to the content, but also takes the dissection to a new level using interactive, embeddable images.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">It in essence, redefines the dissection as a teaching tool that is not something to work to, but rather to work from. \u00a0Students can also add Youtube videos, websites, and pictures to their own dissection pictures to enhance their structure and function explanations. Beyond that, it is possible to add even more through the <a title=\"Rich Media\" href=\"http:\/\/thinglinkblog.com\/2012\/06\/04\/thinglink-rich-media-tags-an-overview\/\">ThinkLink Rich Media add-on.<\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">What it looks like:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"\/\/cdn.thinglink.me\/api\/image\/468136754671517698\/1024\/10\/scaletowidth#tl-468136754671517698;1043138249\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><b>How to use ThingLink:<\/b><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">Here is a brief step by step process to create a picture of your own:<\/p>\n<ol style=\"text-align: left\">\n<li>Go to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ThingLink.com\">www.ThingLink.com<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Sign up for a free account (use an easy to remember login and password)<\/li>\n<li>Once you are signed in, select the \u2018Me\u2019 tab at the top right corner.<\/li>\n<li>To add an image to your account click on the \u2018Add New Image\u2019 to the left.\u00a0<i>(Remember that this is an open site and you should only add your own pictures to avoid copyright infringement)<\/i><\/li>\n<li><i><\/i>\u00a0Once you have added a photo, it is time to edit it. Click on the picture you have uploaded if it does not automatically allow you to edit it.<\/li>\n<li>Your mouse cursor should change to a + and you can pin information anywhere on your uploaded picture.<\/li>\n<li>Once you have chosen a pinning site the following box will appear:<\/li>\n<li><a style=\"font-size: 13px;line-height: 19px\" href=\"https:\/\/cohort21.com\/timrollwagen\/files\/2014\/01\/Screen-Shot-2014-01-14-at-9.14.25-AM.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-62\" alt=\"Screen Shot 2014-01-14 at 9.14.25 AM\" src=\"https:\/\/cohort21.com\/timrollwagen\/files\/2014\/01\/Screen-Shot-2014-01-14-at-9.14.25-AM-300x81.png\" width=\"300\" height=\"81\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cohort21.com\/timrollwagen\/files\/2014\/01\/Screen-Shot-2014-01-14-at-9.14.25-AM-300x81.png 300w, https:\/\/cohort21.com\/timrollwagen\/files\/2014\/01\/Screen-Shot-2014-01-14-at-9.14.25-AM-1024x279.png 1024w, https:\/\/cohort21.com\/timrollwagen\/files\/2014\/01\/Screen-Shot-2014-01-14-at-9.14.25-AM.png 1364w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/li>\n<li>For an <strong>example<\/strong> go to: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thinglink.com\/scene\/468136754671517698\">http:\/\/www.thinglink.com\/scene\/468136754671517698<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Add as many pins as needed to fulfill the assignment requirements (See below)<\/li>\n<li>Have fun!<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><strong>Implementation:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: left\">\n<li><strong>Class 1:\u00a0<\/strong>Our first class with ThingLink was an introductory one where students took pictures of their own hands and pinned information using ThingLink. \u00a0They were quick to learn and can &#8216;follow&#8217; you (the teacher) easily which allows you to follow them back and keep track of their dissection portfolios. \u00a0You can also comment on them to provide <strong>feedback<\/strong>!<\/li>\n<li><strong>Class 2:<\/strong> The dissection was aided by the &#8216;Digital Frog Dissection&#8217; which is available as a <a title=\"Digital Frog Program\" href=\"http:\/\/www.digitalfrog.com\/products\/frog.html\">program<\/a> or <a title=\"Virtual Frog Dissection\" href=\"http:\/\/www.mhhe.com\/biosci\/genbio\/virtual_labs\/BL_16\/BL_16.html\">online<\/a>. \u00a0Also, I created an assignment that had requirements for pictures that they must take during the dissection.
