{"id":28,"date":"2014-01-20T20:40:54","date_gmt":"2014-01-20T20:40:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cohort21.com\/mikefarley\/?p=28"},"modified":"2014-01-20T21:31:48","modified_gmt":"2014-01-20T21:31:48","slug":"back-to-the-future-introducing-video-games-to-the-history-curriculum-at-uts","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cohort21.com\/mikefarley\/2014\/01\/20\/back-to-the-future-introducing-video-games-to-the-history-curriculum-at-uts\/","title":{"rendered":"Back to the Future &#8211; Introducing Video Games to the History Curriculum at UTS"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cohort21.com\/mikefarley\/files\/2014\/01\/sakkara.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-29\" alt=\"sakkara\" src=\"https:\/\/cohort21.com\/mikefarley\/files\/2014\/01\/sakkara.jpg\" width=\"243\" height=\"191\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>My Cohort 21 action plan is to work with one or two of the History teachers at my school to design student activities to be used with some history-related computer games (e.g. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mission-us.org\/\">Mission-U.S. series<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/deathinsakkara.wedonicethings.com\/\">Death in Sakkara<\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/hightea.wellcomeapps.com\/\">High Tea<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>There are a few main benefits to taking on this plan:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A number of the History teachers at UTS have expressed an interest in using video games in their classes, but have been hesitant to jump in the pool (I teach Geography, but share an office with a few History teachers).\u00a0 I think one of the main reasons is the lack of accompanying student activities for the games.\u00a0 It would be great to work with them to design some activities to help deepen student learning.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>I would like to revisit the way I design student activities for games, and would like to incorporate some of the ideas from the Cohort 21 experience (e.g. the SAMR framework).\u00a0 Working with games that are new to me, and with teachers in another subject area that I am not that familiar with, will help me to develop a fresh approach to game activity design.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>If all goes well, I can use this experience to work with teachers from other departments in the future (e.g. next school year).\u00a0 For example there are a number of excellent computer games that seem like a good fit for the Science curriculum (e.g. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.spongelab.com\/game_pages\/hob.cfm\">The History of Biology<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.filamentgames.com\/projects\/citizen-science\">Citizen Science<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.re-mission2.org\/\">Re-Mission 2<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gameslearningsociety.org\/project_virulent.php\">Virulent<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/games.noaa.gov\/oscar\/welcome.html\">Waterlife<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.teachwithportals.com\/\">Portal 2<\/a>, etc.).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>I\u2019m very excited to take this on, and look forward to working with my Cohort 21 colleagues to help make this come to fruition!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>My Cohort 21 action plan is to work with one or two of the History teachers at my school to design student activities to be used with some history-related computer games (e.g. Mission-U.S. series, Death in Sakkara, and High Tea).
