Thanks for your comment Jan! I think the grade 11’s have erred towards under-estimating their grit and the grade 10’s have erred towards over-estimating theirs (at least according to my personal observations). Plus, it’s a small sample size. Grit is definitely important, and perhaps I can use my graph to help my students understand that.

Great point Lara! It is also easy to forget that our students have to juggle up to 7 other courses, plus extra-curricular activities (both inside and outside school). Students have a lot going on, even if you haven’t assigned any major work or tests recently.

I, also, adore cheeky puns. My students (grade 10s and 11s) often implore me to “tell a science joke, Sir!” I have never been ashamed of being a “nerd” and I hope my students have the courage to embrace their inner self as well.
Recently, our science department has decided to embrace lifelong learning and engagement by allowing students to choose…Read more

I think the key to engagement is finding interesting topics. Students need to know that science is all around them. We can have discussions about interesting science things (have kids suggest topics, even) – and if we get a little off-topic or away from the curriculum once in a while, at least it’s still science.
