From the unknown, constantly changing, and complex landscape of teaching through Covid, to diving back in with both feet. I feel like the last two months have been a time of reinvention and rethinking. While it may be so easy to just go back to what we did before, I think it is important to take pause and to reassess. For the last several years I have changed grades frequently, and in the post Covid world I have landed back in grade 3. In all of the moves I have made during my first years of teaching I have always longed for the chance to do something more than once. I am now in that position that I have longed for, where I will get to make tweaks for next year instead of reinventing the wheel again. With that in mind, I decided that this year would be my opportunity to try everything I have been wanting to, to change everything I think needs changing, and to put in the extra work knowing that it will pay off down the road. Enter Cohort 21.

This journey is giving me the dedicated time, the resources, and the community to help improve my practice, and to make changes. My biggest area of concern in my classroom right now is math. I have never loved my math program and always wanted to dedicate some time to reinvent it. I know that I could be teaching math better, and that with a wide range of needs in my classroom I have not been reaching everyone, or giving all of my students what they need. I have already ripped off the bandaid, thrown caution to the wind, and began overhauling math in my classroom. I look forward to continuing to work through teaching math effectively in the coming months, and to receiving support from my Cohort 21 colleagues in this exciting journey.

I think at the moment my exploration of math falls into strand 1. Reinventing the wheel in math will encompass all areas of this strand. Changing math will involve a shift in pedagogy, learning tools, and assessment. Math is an area of school that has consequences for students academic success, as well as their belonging and well-being. Since I started this journey I have learned that many of my colleagues are also looking to make changes to their math programs. We have begun to discuss these changes as a division, and to share our ideas across the grades. This is exciting and makes me wonder how I can take what I am learning in Cohort 21, and as part of my action plan, and help support my colleagues in their own math programs. The whole thing is just really exciting, and I am looking forward to continuing this exploration in the coming months.

What a whirlwind this school year seems to be.
