It was letting me know that Casey Neistat, one of my favourite filmmakers, was ending his daily vlog. Ironic, as some of you may know that I tossed around the idea of turning my blog into a vlog this year, inspired by Casey. So, on the car ride home, I pulled up his YouTube channel and listened to his vlog.<\/p>\n<p>His message was\u00a0thought provoking\u00a0after our long day of heavy lifting big ideas at Cohort 21:<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"i&#039;m ending the vlog\" width=\"635\" height=\"357\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/l-yrXB95qDo?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s so much to unpack in his message, but I zeroed in on this idea of <strong>relentless personal ambition<\/strong>. I love his analogy of being Tarzan swinging through the jungle, and needing to reach for that next vine.<\/p>\n<p>I wonder, how might we inspire teachers and students to have this kind of personal ambition? How might we create a classroom where all students are striving to reach that next vine, even if it\u2019s a little scary or risky?<\/p>\n<p>We all know that when we set the bar high for students, they tend to rise up. How might we help them learn how to raise that bar for themselves? (<a class='bp-suggestions-mention' href='https:\/\/cohort21.com\/members\/jtrood\/' rel='nofollow'>@jtrood<\/a>, <a class='bp-suggestions-mention' href='https:\/\/cohort21.com\/members\/drutherford\/' rel='nofollow'>@drutherford<\/a>\u00a0&amp; <a class='bp-suggestions-mention' href='https:\/\/cohort21.com\/members\/jbornstein\/' rel='nofollow'>@jbornstein<\/a>\u00a0I know you&#8217;re also asking this question).<\/p>\n<p>We talk about growth mindset, grit, and perseverance, but it\u2019s more that than. In order for a student to develop any of those things, they first need to have the drive to get there.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s not about all students becoming 4+ students, it\u2019s about every student reaching their full potential. About every student always wanting to push themselves to the grab that next vine.<\/p>\n<p>Whether students go into business, or medicine, the arts, science, teaching or something entirely different, if they are constantly be seeking and attempting to move towards the next challenge, they will find \u201csuccess.\u201d And as teachers, we need to model this ambition for our students.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>\u201cThe trouble with success is that it makes you comfortable\u201d &#8211; Casey Neistat<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>As Casey\u00a0points out in the video, when\u00a0we get older and more successful the stakes get\u00a0higher. It\u2019s hard to take risks when you\u2019re in a comfortable place in your career. But as he notes: \u201cA career is always about progress, it\u2019s never arriving in one place and staying there\u201d. How might we, as teachers take risks and model this relentless ambition for personal and professional growth for our students?<\/p>\n<p>Today at the York School, I saw a room full of teachers hungry for growth, supporting each other through collaboration, and pushing each other to take that next step forward. With this type of support, taking ambitious risks becomes a little easier (like posting your <a href=\"http:\/\/cohort21.com\/gillianmatthews\/2016\/11\/19\/the-fear-of-publishing\/\">first blog<\/a>, right <a class='bp-suggestions-mention' href='https:\/\/cohort21.com\/members\/gmatthews\/' rel='nofollow'>@gmatthews<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>It comes back to our \u201cDanger Zone\u201d activity from this morning. It\u2019s not about mastering something and then staying\u00a0where you are, but it\u2019s about the confidence to try something new. As you may know from my <a href=\"https:\/\/cohort21.com\/lesliemcbeth\/2016\/10\/03\/the-courage-to-fail\/\">last post<\/a>, I\u2019m a sucker for anything that highlights those crazy people who take personal ambition to the extremes of what\u2019s possible. I\u2019m not saying that we all need to go out there and climb a mountain, run a 210km race, or even do Karaoke, but it\u2019s about deciding what our own personal limits are, and trying to push ourselves right to the edge of what we feel confident doing. Whether it\u2019s creating a <a href=\"http:\/\/cohort21.com\/gordongrise\/2016\/11\/19\/being-a-maverick-going-from-the-danger-zone-to-top-gun\/#comment-6\">civic-action experience<\/a>\u00a0for your students\u00a0(@ggrise),\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/MackenzieNeale\/status\/799992598299455491\">embracing your own creative confidence<\/a>\u00a0(<a class='bp-suggestions-mention' href='https:\/\/cohort21.com\/members\/mneale\/' rel='nofollow'>@mneale<\/a>), changing attitudes about math (<a class='bp-suggestions-mention' href='https:\/\/cohort21.com\/members\/snewell\/' rel='nofollow'>@snewell<\/a>), addressing digital citizenship (<a class='bp-suggestions-mention' href='https:\/\/cohort21.com\/members\/jmoodey\/' rel='nofollow'>@jmoodey<\/a>)\u00a0or even stealing yoga balls for your classroom (<a class='bp-suggestions-mention' href='https:\/\/cohort21.com\/members\/ddunlap\/' rel='nofollow'>@ddunlap<\/a>), <strong>take that risk. Let go of the\u00a0old vine and reach for the next. I&#8217;ve been showing his videos to my students for years, and I wish I still had a classroom to show them this one. It&#8217;d be a great reflection activity for students to think about their own idea of success.The first Casey video I showed my class was <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/bzE-IMaegzQ\">this one about bike lanes<\/a>, when I was teaching urban design. If you teach civics\/civic-engagement, <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/jU7rhVub0rU\">this one makes an interesting statement about how we choose to spend our money<\/a>\u00a0and help others (@ggrise). Casey has the words &#8220;Do More&#8221; and &#8220;Work Harder&#8221; tatooed on his arm, so he is a special kind of ambitious\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/rYCODMuoHNI\">this one highlights just how crazy-ambitious he is<\/a>.
