{"id":88,"date":"2016-11-28T03:11:19","date_gmt":"2016-11-28T03:11:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cohort21.com\/larajensen\/?p=88"},"modified":"2016-11-28T03:38:39","modified_gmt":"2016-11-28T03:38:39","slug":"university-lessons-for-the-k-5-classroom","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cohort21.com\/larajensen\/2016\/11\/28\/university-lessons-for-the-k-5-classroom\/","title":{"rendered":"University Lessons for the K-5 Classroom"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.learningissocial.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/img_5060.jpg\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1300 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/www.learningissocial.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/img_5060.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"405\" height=\"304\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px;font-weight: normal\">I might be a Michael Wesch groupie&#8230; I have watched several of his videos and mentioned them in more than one blog post.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px;font-weight: normal\">I first came across him through <a href=\"http:\/\/ds106.us\/\" target=\"_blank\">ds106<\/a> back in 2012 when I watched his presentation\u00a0to the faculty at the University of Mary Washington and briefly blogged about it <a href=\"http:\/\/www.learningissocial.ca\/media-mediate-relationships\/\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>.\u00a0At that time, I learned that technology is not just a tool or a means of communication &#8211; it can change the way we interact. While there can be challenges with this, it is not necessarily a bad thing&#8230; We were both very upbeat about the potential for being able to use the tools to collaborate, organize, create and publish.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe title=\"Michael Wesch at UMW Faculty Academy Part 1\" src=\"https:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/23913046?dnt=1&amp;app_id=122963\" width=\"635\" height=\"357\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"autoplay; fullscreen; picture-in-picture; clipboard-write\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/vimeo.com\/23913046\">Michael Wesch at UMW Faculty Academy Part 1<\/a> from <a href=\"https:\/\/vimeo.com\/umwnewmedia\">umwnewmedia<\/a> on <a href=\"https:\/\/vimeo.com\">Vimeo<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">H<span style=\"font-size: 16px;font-weight: normal\">e popped up again when I dropped in on a<a href=\"http:\/\/connectedcourses.net\/\" target=\"_blank\"> Connected Courses<\/a> session in 2014<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px;font-weight: normal\">. He moderated a discussion about the purpose of higher education\u00a0with Cathy Davidson and Randy Bass. It was comforting\u00a0for me to hear how those who teach in higher education have determined the same thing as those of us in K-5 education: the best lessons are those where students to want to revise their work, work on a problem that matters to them, have a real audience,\u00a0want to do the work, and are immersed in the discipline.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe title=\"The End of Higher Education: A Discussion About Purpose\" width=\"635\" height=\"357\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/JFcjrwaJV0E?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: left\">Learning Arc<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px;font-weight: normal\">It has also been interesting for me to see how his personal\u00a0learning has mirrored my own &#8211; \u00a0from wondering how best to engage learners to utilizing tools to connect learners to exploring\u00a0the nature of learning, in general.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px;font-weight: normal\">I started messing about with technology in the classroom ages ago by creating webpages in 1996, using the open-ended <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tjande.com\/orly\/kidsdescrip.htm\" target=\"_blank\">Orly&#8217;s Draw-a-Story<\/a> and trying to figure out <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=--q8Hd-NLIY\" target=\"_blank\">Where in the World Carmen Sandiego<\/a> was in 1999.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium\"><span style=\"font-weight: normal\">Now <a href=\"http:\/\/psolarz.weebly.com\/how-to-set-up-and-run-a-mystery-skype-session.html\" target=\"_blank\">Mystery Skypes<\/a> or Hangouts let us connect to real students around the world and determine their location basically by playing 20 questions and portfolio or blog platforms make it easy for even the youngest learners to share their thinking with the world.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium\"><span style=\"font-weight: normal\">I too would like to leverage peers to help us all develop skills and ensure that the learning journey is more important than the final product and to focus on the communal aspect of the web to help one another learn and succeed.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>We have both more recently explored creative ventures such as creating films to share our understanding with others.<\/p>\n<h2>Applications for K-5 Teachers<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium\"><span style=\"font-weight: normal\">In a recent workshop I led about The Role of ICT in the PYP I was very pleased that my participants seemed to enjoy the video from Knowledgeable to Knowledge-able as much as me!<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe title=\"TEDxKC - Michael Wesch - From Knowledgeable to Knowledge-Able\" width=\"635\" height=\"357\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/LeaAHv4UTI8?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><span style=\"font-weight: normal;font-size: medium\">\u00a0In the workshop we identified the following as key ideas:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Need to go beyond critical thinking<\/li>\n<li>Need to develop the skills to connect, organize, share, collect, collaborate, and publish<\/li>\n<li>Layers of creativity<\/li>\n<li>Embrace real problems<\/li>\n<li>Harness and leverage relevant tools<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>I assigned each\u00a0participant an attribute of the IB Learner Profile and as they\u00a0watched the video, they reflected on how their trait was connected.<\/p>\n<p>Afterwards they were introduced to the idea of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/126588706@N08\/\" target=\"_blank\">Sketchnotes<\/a> and drew how their Learner Profile attribute was connected to technology use in the classroom. They then posted their drawings to their Seesaw blogs and made links between the Learner Profile and PYP Attitudes. The <a href=\"https:\/\/flic.kr\/s\/aHskPC5htF\" target=\"_blank\">final products<\/a> are not necessarily works of art but the deep thinking and conversations that happened as a result of these provocations were inspiring.<\/p>\n<p>Whenever I plan a workshop I seem to go back and see what Michael&#8217;s \u00a0got going on.
