Here are some takeaways:<\/strong><\/h3>\n<h4><b><b><\/b><\/b><b><b><span style=\"color: #ff6600\">Attending a conference this big with a colleague makes a huge difference<\/span><\/b><\/b><\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/cohort21.com\/jenbibby\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/16\/files\/2014\/11\/rachel.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft  wp-image-165\" src=\"http:\/\/cohort21.com\/jenbibby\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/16\/files\/2014\/11\/rachel.png\" alt=\"rachel\" width=\"65\" height=\"116\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cohort21.com\/jenniferkelly\/files\/2014\/11\/rachel.png 640w, https:\/\/cohort21.com\/jenniferkelly\/files\/2014\/11\/rachel-169x300.png 169w, https:\/\/cohort21.com\/jenniferkelly\/files\/2014\/11\/rachel-576x1024.png 576w, https:\/\/cohort21.com\/jenniferkelly\/files\/2014\/11\/rachel-56x100.png 56w\" sizes=\"auto, (min-width: 960px) 75vw, 100vw\" \/><\/a>Fellow French teacher Rachel and I had such a great time spending 24\/4 together!! I haven&#8217;t been this blown away since my last Cohort 21 face to face session.\u00a0We were able to attend twice as many sessions, check in with each other throughout the day, de-brief over dinner and cram twice as many goodies from the Exhibit Hall in our bags to take home. We even have a collaboration opportunity between our Grade 9 &amp; 12 French classes in the works &#8211; stay tuned!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><\/h4>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #ff6600\"><b><b>#langchat stars: they\u2019re just like us!<\/b><\/b><\/span><\/h4>\n<p>I was so excited to see and meet some of my favourite #langchat personalities in person: Colleen Lee-Hayes (<span style=\"color: #0000ff\">@CoLeeSensei<\/span>), whose session I didn\u2019t see but I made a point of meeting to thank her for all of her contributions on <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/search?q=%23langchat&amp;src=typd\" target=\"_blank\">Twitter<\/a>; Laura Sexton (<span style=\"color: #0000ff\">@sraspanglish<\/span>), whose session on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.haikudeck.com\/find-their-inner-genius-education-presentation-fZmpYLl6cl#\" target=\"_blank\">Genius Hour projects<\/a> was very inspirational and timely given that we have been discussing this type of idea as a whole school; Sara Elizabeth Cottrell (<span style=\"color: #0000ff\">@musicuentos<\/span>), who along with Laura and Bethany Drew (<span style=\"color: #0000ff\">@lovemysummer<\/span>) presented how they personalize homework tasks for their students. What a fantastic idea and <a href=\"http:\/\/musicuentos.com\/tag\/homework\/\"><strong>resource<\/strong><\/a> they\u2019ve shared! All of these twitter personalities and many more have inspired me to jump back into the Cohort 21 forum to share\u00a0my adventures in French teaching on this blog.<\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #ff6600\"><b><b>Time to reflect on vision for my department\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/cohort21.com\/jenbibby\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/16\/files\/2014\/11\/Vision-e1417283090516.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-166 \" src=\"http:\/\/cohort21.com\/jenbibby\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/16\/files\/2014\/11\/Vision-e1417283090516.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"281\" height=\"160\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cohort21.com\/jenniferkelly\/files\/2014\/11\/Vision-e1417283090516.jpg 3182w, https:\/\/cohort21.com\/jenniferkelly\/files\/2014\/11\/Vision-e1417283090516-300x170.jpg 300w, https:\/\/cohort21.com\/jenniferkelly\/files\/2014\/11\/Vision-e1417283090516-1024x582.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/cohort21.com\/jenniferkelly\/files\/2014\/11\/Vision-e1417283090516-100x56.jpg 100w\" sizes=\"auto, (min-width: 960px) 75vw, 100vw\" \/><\/a><\/b><\/b><\/span><\/h4>\n<p>Debbie Callihan-Dingle\u2019s presentation on moving towards proficiency provided a template and a great opportunity to reflect on recent <a href=\"http:\/\/www.edu.gov.on.ca\/eng\/curriculum\/secondary\/fsl912curr2014.pdf\" target=\"_blank\"><strong><span style=\"color: #0000ff\">changes to our FSL curriculum<\/span><\/strong><\/a> and where we are going. Meeting like-minded teachers last weekend and seeing our new curriculum in print &#8211; \u00a0which brings intercultural competency to the forefront &#8211; has been a real affirmation for me after abandoning the textbook years ago in favour of authentic, real-world learning!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #ff6600\"><b><b>How to scaffold rich learning tasks for upper year students<\/b><\/b><\/span><\/h4>\n<p>I wanted to come away from ACTFL with some new strategies to provide rigorous, yet well-supported learning opportunities for my upper year students. For instance, how can I get my students to engage with\u00a0one another about authentic texts they\u2019ve researched according to their interests that are also linked to the AP themes? My AP students are working towards their first socratic seminar, linked to one of the AP themes but personalized to meet their\u00a0interests. I attended two sessions on Socratic circles designed for second language learners, presented by Susan Menand (<span style=\"color: #0000ff\">@menandteacher<\/span>) and another pair whose presentation notes will hopefully be posted to the ACTFL site this weekend. Both provided great resources and steps for success.<\/p>\n<p><b><b>New ideas I could implement right away<\/b><\/b><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>One of the <a href=\"http:\/\/musicuentos.com\/tag\/homework\/\" target=\"_blank\"><b>choose your own adventure<\/b><\/a> homework tasks was to use <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/\" target=\"_blank\"><b>twitter<\/b><\/a> to reach out to the global Target Language\u00a0community; another was to look up twitter hashtags in the target language and share what comes up &#8211; great authentic ways to access the target language.<\/li>\n<li>In his Enhancing Global Competency session, Paul Lange introduced me to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.zaption.com\/\" target=\"_blank\"><b>zaption.com<\/b><\/a>, where I found posts by ACTFL TOY\u2019s Nicole Naditz &#8211; this must be a great site for curating authentic listening material.<\/li>\n<li>Using <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aurasma.com\/aura\/\" target=\"_blank\"><b>Aurasma<\/b><\/a> to post student presentations around the classroom and have students from other classes listen and respond (this is what I have in mind for my collaboration idea!)<\/li>\n<li><b><a href=\"http:\/\/ajjuliani.com\/20-time-guide\/\" target=\"_blank\">20 Time<\/a>\/<a href=\"https:\/\/www.haikudeck.com\/find-their-inner-genius-education-presentation-fZmpYLl6cl#\" target=\"_blank\">Genius Hour<\/a><\/b> projects in Target Language: could this be the alternative I\u2019ve been waiting for to the traditional end of year exam?<\/li>\n<li><b>Cultural do\u2019s and dont\u2019s<\/b>: Get parents\/school community involved and present a do\u2019s and don\u2019ts video to our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.haikudeck.com\/find-their-inner-genius-education-presentation-fZmpYLl6cl#\" target=\"_blank\"><b>e-pals<\/b><\/a> in France; have them respond with their own cultural practices.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center\"><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600\">If you are or know a World Language teacher at your school, I&#8217;d highly recommend making a trip to ACTFL next November!<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>On November 20-23, I attended the ACTFL annual conference for World Language teachers.
