Although I initially believed the answer lay in <b>google hangouts<\/b>, the path has not been as straightforward as I thought.<\/p>\n<p>First, I set out to research what other teachers and ed tech experts were saying about using google hangouts in class.<\/p>\n<p><b>Med Karbach<\/b> posted a helpful intro and this <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/document\/d\/13LQkWSH104pwgjWvIXpXf6O8wi23zPG4hzcJ9I32in0\/edit\" target=\"_blank\">tip sheet<\/a>\u00a0for first time google hangout users. A great starting point for everyone, as I discovered early on, as there can be some hiccups involved in setting up and hosting a hangout!<\/p>\n<p>In her <a href=\"http:\/\/www.edutopia.org\/blog\/educators-schools-google-hangouts-mary-beth-hertz\" target=\"_blank\">Edutopia post<\/a><b>, Mary Beth Hertz <\/b>discussed how hangouts could facilitate <a href=\"http:\/\/connectedlearning.tv\/equity-and-learning-21st-century-classroom-explore-connect-transform\" target=\"_blank\">connected learning<\/a>\u00a0for students and got me thinking about authentic exchanges I could set up for my students in the \u201creal world\u201d beyond the classroom (also a great opportunity for personalization, depending on my students\u2019 interests)<b><\/b><\/p>\n<p>In <a href=\"http:\/\/mrkscorner.com\/2013\/03\/19\/connecting-beyond-the-classroom-google-hangouts\/\" target=\"_blank\">Connecting Beyond the Classroom<\/a>, <b>Bill Krakower<\/b> wrote about the benefits of collaborating on a google doc as a group, and being able to view a youTube video of the hangout at a later time. I really liked the idea of hosting a debate between two language classes within the CIS (<b>RSGC vs SAC! <\/b>Bring it on!)<\/p>\n<p>In <a href=\"http:\/\/www.edutopia.org\/blog\/google-hangouts-connecting-sharing-learning-andrew-marcinek\" target=\"_blank\">Google hangouts as Edtech: Connecting, Sharing and Learning<\/a>, <b>Andrew Marcinek <\/b>shared how his students broadcast their TEDtalk research projects and tech-related instructional videos with a wider audience using hangouts.<\/p>\n<p>In a post published on <a href=\"http:\/\/thejournal.com\/Home.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">The Journal<\/a>,\u00a0<b>Bridget McCrea<\/b> further highlights <strong>Marcinek<\/strong>\u2019s work with <a href=\"http:\/\/thejournal.com\/articles\/2013\/09\/17\/6-ways-teachers-can-use-google-hangouts.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">6 ways students can use google hangouts<\/a> , including the use of hangouts to archive students work in digital portfolios, as well as replacing Skype or FaceTime with a better tool for online collaboration.<\/p>\n<p>I learned a lot from these posts, and hope to learn more as more teachers begin to use google hangouts in their classes. I loved <b>Celeste<\/b>\u2019s idea of setting up a google hangout to discuss hangouts in the classroom with people who have practical experience. I made up a dream list of people I\u2019d like to include in such a hangout\u2026 and then 2 months flew by! I promised myself I wouldn\u2019t publish this post without setting it up. Our <b>hangout<\/b> is scheduled for this Thursday at 4pm.
