{"id":217,"date":"2014-12-15T16:28:53","date_gmt":"2014-12-15T16:28:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cohort21.com\/garthnichols\/?p=217"},"modified":"2014-12-15T16:28:53","modified_gmt":"2014-12-15T16:28:53","slug":"3d-printing-the-future","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cohort21.com\/garthnichols\/classroom\/3d-printing-the-future\/","title":{"rendered":"3D Printing the Future"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>One of the most provocative things I was told was to &#8220;sell your Smartboards, and buy 3D printers!&#8221; (Richard Byrne at the ECOO conference keynote address), and I&#8217;ve been exploring\u00a0this idea ever since&#8230;big time! Reading, researching, attending the Toronto Maker-Faire, and visiting <a href=\"http:\/\/www.makelab.ca\" target=\"_blank\">MakeLab<\/a> in Toronto. I&#8217;ve discovered some incredible things about 3D printing:<\/p>\n<p>1) The Royal Mail service in Britain is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/technology\/2014\/dec\/09\/royal-mail-launches-3d-printing-service\">starting to use it<\/a>\u00a0to make themselves more relevant<br \/>\n2) The Smithsonian used 3D printing to <a href=\"http:\/\/mashable.com\/2014\/12\/02\/smithsonian-obama-bust\/\">make a bust of Obama<br \/>\n<\/a>3) The National Museum in Britain lets you <a href=\"http:\/\/mashable.com\/2014\/10\/31\/british-museum-3d-printing-sketchfab\/\">3D print its artifacts<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Tom Kale, from the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy said of Obama&#8217;s 3D bust:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;This is part of a broader trend going on, and that is the third industrial revolution. It&#8217;s the combination of the physical world and the digital world allowing students and entrepreneurs to go from idea to prototype in the blink of an eye.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I have begun to believe that this is true. While there is still a time and place for effective use of Smartboards in the classroom, I am beginning to shirt to a different solution &#8211; one of many in a classroom of the future. That solution would be to have a 3D printer available to teachers and students.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cohort21.com\/garthnichols\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/6\/files\/2014\/12\/3D_Printing_of_Twitter.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-220\" src=\"https:\/\/cohort21.com\/garthnichols\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/6\/files\/2014\/12\/3D_Printing_of_Twitter-283x300.png\" alt=\"3D_Printing_of_Twitter\" width=\"176\" height=\"187\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cohort21.com\/garthnichols\/files\/2014\/12\/3D_Printing_of_Twitter-283x300.png 283w, https:\/\/cohort21.com\/garthnichols\/files\/2014\/12\/3D_Printing_of_Twitter-94x100.png 94w, https:\/\/cohort21.com\/garthnichols\/files\/2014\/12\/3D_Printing_of_Twitter.png 398w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 176px) 100vw, 176px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Not only is a 3D printer something that students can use to demonstrate their learning, it is something that students can use to learn about their learning, and deepen it. They can study it as a device itself, using math to determine cost and time of printing. Students can use it to bring their prototypes to life. However, recalling our work on <a href=\"http:\/\/cohort21.com\/blog\/2014\/11\/24\/our-2nd-f2f-reconnecting-reframing-and-taking-action\/\" target=\"_blank\">TPAC with Cohort 21<\/a>, it is important to apply a framework. I am tempted to just go with TC &#8211; let&#8217;s get students printing! Let&#8217;s get them excited about learning in this new way! This approach has its own merits for sure.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 278px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/www.2020magazine.ca\/_uploads\/magazine\/article\/4v799x4i5.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"268\" height=\"120\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">The 3rd Industrial Revolution: going from idea to prototype and testing immediately<\/p><\/div>\n<p>However, what I am looking at now is PK, pedagogical knowledge. How can we use a 3D printer to shift the way learning happens in the classroom? I think that once the learning is happening around the concept of CREATION, then students are put into a position of inquiry, evaluation and deeper learning.<br \/>\n&#8211; Geography: students will design a topographical map, critic them as a class, evaluate them, and hold a vote to see which one gets printed<br \/>\n&#8211; Math: Student can design an object using different shapes and print them out and use them as manipulatives<br \/>\n&#8211; Social Science: print a mask of a famous Canadian, and curate an exhibit around that person<\/p>\n<p>I think that the possibilities of pedagogical shift are exciting.\u00a03D printers have the potential to revolutionize the libraries and classrooms of today &amp; tomorrow. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.techknight.com\/press\/\">Derek Quenville<\/a>\u00a0of TechKnight says:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>[3D printing] is gaining popularity and it has the potential to revolutionize manufacturing and the way we access tools. It\u2019s also seen as a necessary digital skill for kids today&#8230;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>What is most exciting is that Stratasys has just launched an entire 3D printing curriculum. It is available for download <a href=\"http:\/\/www.stratasys.com\/industries\/education\/educators\/curriculum\">HERE<\/a>. I know that many schools have 3D printers now, and I&#8217;d love to hear more about how they are being used, and how they are integrated into the curriculum.
