When you are the smartest person in the room it is time to find a new room.  I feel #blessed to be surrounded by such amazing educators.

I come to teaching with a rich background as a professional software developer.  Every journey begins with a single step and every software developer begins with the same first program, the Hello World program.  To the casual observer it seems simple, make the words “Hello World!” appear on the screen.  For some people, that first step is rather profound.  The idea that you can take control of a computer and make it do your specific commands can feel empowering.  Arthur C. Clarke said, “Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic.” and learning to program can feel like watching Penn and Teller reveal the slight of hand behind a magic trick.

This year has been my teaching “Hello World!” with so many firsts and discoveries.  Like technology, teaching is a part of me and who I am and I am excited for where this journey takes me.

  1. Hi David!
I’m also a former software nerd. Let’s chat on Friday – I’d like to hear about your background and what you are teaching. We can swap nerd stories!

  2. Hi Dave,
Glass ceiling broken – you’re ready to rock! A year of first can be overwhelming and sometimes it takes a lot of time to chew and process the information so that you can do something with it! It’s great that you’re blogging about the experience and I love the first sentence!

Looking forward to catching up on Friday!
