My planning periods were consumed by marking, leaving no time for the program innovation I knew my students needed. The frustration wasn&#8217;t with my students\u2014it was with a system that prioritized grading over planning.<\/mark><\/p>\n<h2><mark>The Realization<\/mark><\/h2>\n<p><mark>Through this Design Thinking session, I reframed my challenge: <\/mark><strong><mark>&#8220;How might we streamline marking so that I reclaim planning time for program innovation?&#8221;<\/mark><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><mark>I realized I was trying to mark <\/mark><em><mark>everything<\/mark><\/em><mark>, when what my students really needed was <\/mark><em><mark>strategic, timely feedback<\/mark><\/em><mark> on the most critical concepts.<\/mark><\/p>\n<h2><mark>The Solution: A Two-Tier Assessment System<\/mark><\/h2>\n<p><strong><mark>Formative Assessment (Daily Classwork):<\/mark><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><mark>Mark only <\/mark><strong><mark>3 key concepts per assignment<\/mark><\/strong><mark> during class time<\/mark><\/li>\n<li><mark>Use <\/mark><strong><mark>peer checking<\/mark><\/strong><mark> for remaining work (students check with a partner who is finished)<\/mark><\/li>\n<li><mark>Implement <\/mark><strong><mark>exit tickets<\/mark><\/strong><mark> to assess other concepts without adding marking burden<\/mark><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><mark>Summative Assessment (Unchanged):<\/mark><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><mark>Continue with mid-chapter quizzes and unit tests to evaluate mastery<\/mark><\/li>\n<li><mark>These remain comprehensive and rigorous<\/mark><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><mark>Why This Works<\/mark><\/h2>\n<p><mark>This system separates two critical functions:<\/mark><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><mark>Feedback function:<\/mark><\/strong><mark> Frequent, manageable, and focused (formative)<\/mark><\/li>\n<li><strong><mark>Grading function:<\/mark><\/strong><mark> Comprehensive and rigorous (summative)<\/mark><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><mark>By focusing my expert marking on the 3 most important concepts, I&#8217;m not abandoning assessment\u2014I&#8217;m being <\/mark><em><mark>strategic<\/mark><\/em><mark> about where my time creates the most impact.<\/mark><\/p>\n<h2><mark>The Immediate Next Steps (This Week)<\/mark><\/h2>\n<ol>\n<li><mark>Review this week&#8217;s math classwork and identify the 3 most critical concepts to mark<\/mark><\/li>\n<li><mark>Plan how to introduce this new system to students so they understand the feedback structure<\/mark><\/li>\n<li><mark>Commit to marking these 3 concepts <\/mark><strong><mark>during class time<\/mark><\/strong><mark>, not during prep periods<\/mark><\/li>\n<li><mark>Track whether this actually frees up prep time<\/mark><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2><mark>The Bigger Picture<\/mark><\/h2>\n<p><mark>If I reclaim even 3-4 hours of prep time per week, I can finally tackle the differentiation work I&#8217;ve been wanting to do. This isn&#8217;t about doing less\u2014it&#8217;s about doing what matters most.<\/mark><\/p>\n<p><mark>The real innovation isn&#8217;t in the marking system itself.
