{"id":82,"date":"2017-01-13T15:48:46","date_gmt":"2017-01-13T15:48:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cohort21.com\/allisonmacrae\/?p=82"},"modified":"2017-01-13T19:45:20","modified_gmt":"2017-01-13T19:45:20","slug":"engagement-what-does-that-mean","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cohort21.com\/allisonmacrae\/2017\/01\/13\/engagement-what-does-that-mean\/","title":{"rendered":"Engagement: What does that mean?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Design Thinking and Action Plan<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><em>Student Engagement<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>How might we build an experience (curriculum \/ physical-environment \/ assessment) that optimizes engagement?<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>\u00a0To start on this journey, I need to define the essential elements of student engagement<\/li>\n<li>Ask the students:\n<ol>\n<li>what engagement looks like (does this mean they are happy?<\/li>\n<li>How they like to show their learning<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<li>Build a lesson with movement and choice<\/li>\n<li>Get feedback from kids about the lesson (what did they like, how did they feel?)<\/li>\n<li>Design the room with intention<\/li>\n<li>PBL, constructivism<\/li>\n<li>Assessment of learning using a variety of methods (create a feedback cycle between here and step 2)<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>This was actually FUN to look back on some of what I wrote and reflect on what still feels important and\/or relevant. I actually think having space from the plan over the break was good to gain some perspective.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Objectives and Key Results<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Run one session of PLC (done!)<\/li>\n<li>Determine the essential elements of engagement (will do next week)<\/li>\n<li>Run an empathy challenge\/activity (collaborate with a colleague) &#8211; Almost done planning<\/li>\n<li>Get the letter written to Fern (my local TDSB school) to create a conversation about environment (decided to wait until April in order to put the emphasis on next year)<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>What changed my thinking as I went through the design thinking process?<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I thought my concern was about the furniture\/design of the room\u00a0when really the question is about engagement. I don&#8217;t believe that listening to someone lecture (at least in math) allows for deep engagement&#8221;\u00a0<em>and now I would even add that I still believe the physical environment is a critical factor of student engagement and would add that assessment matters as well.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Questions I still have:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>How will it work with shared classrooms (subject and colleagues)?<\/li>\n<li>What do I like about a kindergarten room?<\/li>\n<li>What do I dislike about a high school classroom?<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>My plan for next week:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Send an email to my department asking them to let me know what they think engagement looks like for the students<\/li>\n<li>Interview my students (Tuesday) and ask them to tell me a story or draw a picture of their experience in my classroom (in relation to engagement)<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Stay Tuned!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Design Thinking and Action Plan &nbsp; Student Engagement &nbsp; How might we build an experience (curriculum \/ physical-environment \/ assessment) that optimizes engagement? &nbsp; \u00a0To start on this journey, I need to define the essential elements of student engagement Ask the students: what engagement looks like (does this mean they are happy?
